In the past weeks, my class has been assigned two tasks. The first being a complaint piece, and the other being the “Never Seen, Never Will” task. In both tasks we encompassed all of the artistic behaviors listed above in our work processes, but among them, the most prominent for me were taking risks, solving problems and reflecting on my work. The complaint piece, my first first work, had very little done due to my own discontent. I was unable to get a solid idea down after five days, and I ended up having to do everything at home. I later got a pretty solid idea down, but did not fully bring my idea to fruition. However, my idea was clearly conveyed being that the media and comedians are always focused on Trump, and it is difficult to get away from politics in modern day society. After a day or so of working on my complaint piece the second assignment was made, and it completely overshadowed my complaint piece. I stopped working on my complaint piece once I had a good idea for my Never See assignment. I did a dragon after being recommended to do so by piers(collaboration). This piece was rigorous and required me to use many different skills, such as value. There were also many small areas that I had to fill in, and it was very tedious to constantly squint and try to fill in spaces not much bigger than the brush tip itself. I also took a huge risk with my color pallet because the vibrant colors of the sky and mountains were a huge contrast to the brown, orange, and green in the front. It worked out well in my opinion, and I couldn’t have done it without reflecting on my past works and getting feedback from peers and mentors. Both assignments were worth the time, but I think blog posts should be homework for AP students, classwork is too valuable.

The first assignment of the year was a task party. I thought it was very interesting, and it got the creative juices flowing…. If u wanted to at least. I choose some easy ones and thought it wasn’t all that productive, that was my own fault. It made me come up with creative solutions to the problems I was presented, and helped me get a better understanding of the key concepts of art. The second project we were assigned was a collaborative piece. We were each given a tiny square that we had to enlarge to two times scale. When we put our pieces together they ended up making a distorted version of one of Picasso’s famous works. This assignment gave us practice in rescaling artwork and using value, which are both very valuable abilities. It also allowed us to study Picasso’s work. Entering a new year of art, I want to try quite a bit harder than last year and focus in more on my strengths. In my opinion, the time I spent in Art 1 was not very productive. I got my assignments done, but that’s about it. I rarely did anything extra aside from meeting requirements. I think this is mainly due to lack of freedom we had in our assignments (We were learning techniques). However, this year I have the opportunity to choose a concentration and make 24 artworks of my choosing for my portfolio. I can tell this will be a far more rigorous year, but I appreciate the freedom and will do my best to put ample work into my assignments.
I'm not to proud of this figure, as I had no time to turn it into anything great, nor did I wish to. I don't mind sculpting, but if I am doing my own proportions I would prefer to use different materials.
For this unit we all made identical molds for masks, and were then asked to design the mask to make it unique. I chose splatter paint because I enjoy the process and look. The color scheme of black and red is sinister, and I enjoy the reaction some people have to it.
During the colored pencil unit, I learned that more colors are used to create colors than meets the eye. I used lots of dark blue and purple in my candy bar piece to darken the brown in many places, and red/yellow to brighten parts. (THE PAPER IS NOT MINE, IT IS JOE'S)
during this unit we worked with clays and its many forms. For each of the assignment we were given clay in its traditional state(wet), where it can be molded and shaped by will. After some time has passed and the clay begins to dry and forms into a leather like firm piece of clay, hence the name "leather hard". During this stage I did simple things like carving and slight reshaping. After leather hard the clay dries into a very solid and cracky state known as bone dry(the most fragile state) In this state sanding and refining methods can be used with ease. Also certain glazes and painting methods can be used as well. Once the piece of bone dry clay you have is fully refined you would place the clay into the kiln for a bisque firing, where it transforms into it's bisque state. When Clay is in it's bisque state it is technically a finished product, but if preferred by the artist a glaze can be added to the piece and re-fired.
